Industrial Electricians - Duties and Qualifications

Industrial electricians are in charge of installing, maintaining and testing industrial electrical equipment. They are also tasked with troubleshooting and repairing these instruments. It is common to find these industrial electricians employed in factories, plants, mines, and other industrial related business.

They read and interpret schematic diagrams, drawings, electrical code specifications, and blueprints of electrical equipment or devices. They also install, examine, and replace electrical wiring systems, switches, and cables. They also make sure that the devices or equipment are properly maintained and operated. Maintenance and repair of generators and transformers are also some of their duties.

They also must be aware of the important safety precautions related with their work since the nature of their work is very dangerous. Most of the time, they work with high voltage equipment or devices.

Requirements or Qualifications for Employment

There are some qualifications for an electrician to be employed. The person must have at least finished secondary education. Another common requirement is the completion of an electrician training program. Employers prefer if it is related to the industrial setting. Most industrial electricians are required to have three to four years apprenticeship or experience. Having satisfactory or better performance in their training program is an advantage, giving them a better chance for employment.

Industrial electricians must know or be familiar with the installation and operation of basic and common equipment. The basic theories of electricity are also one of them.

Though this is not related to the skills of industrial electricians, having good communication skills is another advantage. The person must be able to effectively express themselves both in reading and in writing. Good leadership skills are also a plus.
